Dear MSO Retirees,

We welcome new retiree Lynn Horner to our group!  I first met Lynn at the Marlboro Music Festival in the early 70’s.  She was a student at Curtis then and I had the opportunity to hear her talent in some wonderful performances.  She also was a great square dancer!   It is unfortunate the orchestra was unable to give her an appropriate thank-you due to the season’s cancellation, but hope that she will enjoy her coming days of no run-outs, double rehearsals, and 9 service weeks.

~~~~~~~~~~
Before COVID 19 took over our schedules, Anne and Gary Kamerling enjoyed a break from Milwaukee’s cold weather.  Anne writes-
We just returned from 3+ weeks in Phoenix. We enjoyed many museums, especially the Musical Instruments Museum. We also saw the Desert Botanical Garden and the zoo.  Garry enjoyed renting an electric scooter there and now is planning to get a Zinger! We drove winding roads in the mountains and attended a winning Brewers game as well. We drove to Tucson and enjoyed a visit with Bonnie Peterson, who is busy playing in an opera orchestra now….attaching a photo of us in her back yard. But maybe the best part of our vacation was just walking around without heavy coats!
Janet Millard also had an MSO visitor.  Kathy Collison joined fellow cellist, ex-flutist Janet at a concert while traveling in Arizona and New Mexico.   Kathy’s daughter, Diana, is a paramedic and has lived in New Mexico for six years.  This July she will be joining the next class of Physician Assistants at the University of New Mexico Medical School.  No, Kathy isn’t a retiree, but I thought you might enjoy catching up with her.
Danis Kelly, her sister Suzanne and brother-in-law John visited Hawaii in late February.  They enjoyed a cruise around the islands and Danis spent extra time in Oahu.  Their last island before returning to Oahu on the ship was Kauai and we had a wonderful visit with them.  Suzanne is a lover of the musical South Pacific and we toured all the beaches where songs were filmed.  We also managed to sneak in a trip to Waimea Canyon.  It was great to see Danis again-  I used to call her “my other stand partner.”  Suzanne is a violinist and John a bassoonist retired now from the North Carolina Symphony and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra.  When you visit Kauai, we’ll show you our island, too.
I painted this based on a photo from Cuba. I’m hoping we can see the beauty of the world despite our collective fears. Take care everyone.
If all goes well with the city opening, David Taggart will be joining the members of his new orchestra, the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra, for their performance at the Italian Community Center (631 E Chicago St, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202) on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 7 PM – 8 PM.  The performance will be held in Festa Hall and is open to the public- $10 at the door. Refreshments will be available for purchase from La Scala restaurant.
Having been founded in 1900, the MMO is the oldest fretted-instrument music organization in the United States!  Go if you can and give David your support.  Glenn Asch’s wife, Laurie, also plays with them.  I’m sure it will be a lot of fun.
I hope you have been viewing the wonderful work the MSO Musicians have been providing on their FaceBook site.  There is a violin Bach Marathon, you can learn how to make reeds with a bassoonist, hear a rollicking Beer Barrel Polka from the horn section, and read updates on what various musicians are doing during this time away from the job.  The MSO’s own Backstage site has a beautiful performance done of Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations as a gift to the community and in memory of Walter Robb, a longtime MSO supporter.  You can also view it at https://youtu.be/E8T7Y-E6E_w
As I write this, it is May 4th.  A day usually remembered by “May the 4th be with you,” but for Woody and me it has a different significance.  We were both at Kent State fifty years ago and experienced the “Kent State Massacre.”  I was a grad student teaching my Music Fundamentals course when we heard the shots.  Woody, as you would guess, was in the midst of it all with his trusty Leicas.
On Saturday night students had burned the ROTC building demonstrating against the bombing of Cambodia.  They then marched a few blocks into downtown and caused  disturbance and damage.  As I walked to campus on Monday the 4th, I saw a tank with Ohio State National Guardsmen and their rifles with bayonets mounted at the main entrance of the University.  The Guard were very tired, having been sent directly to Kent after dealing with a nasty Teamsters strike during the weekend.
That afternoon Woody found himself at the end of a long line of Guardsman with weapons drawn and facing down the hill toward students.  He saw a hand raise with a pistol and fire the first shot.  I didn’t believe the shots we heard in class were real.  I knew the Guard had a series of steps in controlling riots and live ammo was at the bottom of that list.  We had smelled tear gas, one of the first measures.  How could it jump so quickly to the most deadly?  Sixty-seven bullets fired in 13 seconds killed four  and wounded nine students.  Of those killed, the average distance from the Guard was 345 feet.  One Guardsman was hurt 10 minutes before the shooting started.  The President’s Commission on Campus Unrest criticized both the protesters and the Guardsmen, but it concluded that “the indiscriminate firing of rifles into a crowd of students and the deaths that followed were unnecessary, unwarranted, and inexcusable.”
Classes were canceled for the rest of the term, but we were able to gather for a performance of  Britten’s War Requiem performed by students and faculty of the Music School with Robert Shaw conducting.  You can still see bullet holes in the metal sculpture in front of the Journalism building
Dear MSO Retirees,
Hope your new year is off to a great start.  It has been a while since the last newsletter so let’s get reading.
John Lounsbery is still sharing his talent with several groups in the Santa Rosa area.  John has been busy playing with the ECHO Chamber Orchestra in San Rafael, Symphony of the Redwoods, the Lakeville Symphony, and at the Sonoma State University Horn Gathering.
Dennis Najoom has successfully passed his bartending legal test!  While Dennis says it didn’t teach how to concoct various drinks, he was taught all the state laws and best practices in the field. Here is Dennis, on the other side of the bar, with David Lussier, Gregory Vajda, Debbie Steidl, Pat McGinn, and Tom Wetzel in 2006.75339464_10220216935594865_5201398999696801792_n
Tom Wetzel has been doing a bit of travel, enjoying time in Salt Lake City, Greenville, SC, and Las Vegas.  When not at the tables in Las Vegas, Tom also drove his first super car at SPEEDVEGAS, a 2019 Corvette!  He didn’t include too many details but at the SPEEDVEGAS website I did see that their 2019 Corvette is a Z51 with a top speed of 190 mph, 460 HP and 0-60mph in 3.0 seconds and 0-100mph in 3.9 seconds.  Not too shabby.
Les and Wilanna Kalkhof shared their Christmas newsletter with us.  They celebrated their 45th anniversary this year and are now into their second year of retirement.  They write:
Wilanna is still active at Bay Shore Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, on the music committee, participating in and soloing with the church choir, playing the piano when needed, and lately as one of a small group of assisting lay ministers, a role the church’s new lady pastor has created to encourage greater involvement.  Wilanna also has her book clubs, and many good friends and former MSO colleagues with whom she lunches periodically.
Les, who is by nature and preference far less social, is enjoying photography more and more each passing year.  He still works in both film and digital media, and is blissfully not “up to date” in either.  He continues to relish the outdoors and he gets out far more often than he was able to during his working years.
Les and Wilanna have plans in place for a trip to the Tetons 2020.  Side excursions to Yellowstone are also in the works.
Dr. Tasha is still practicing veterinary medicine at Companion Clinic in Kenosha.  Like any other line of work, hers is a mixture of the rewarding, the mundane, and occasionally the frustrating.  We get to see her once a week for lunch or supper and a pleasant visit.  Ever the globetrotter, Tasha has recently returned from a  trip to the Canary Islands where she went paragliding and enjoyed a stay at a resort on Tenerife with her best friend, Pakou.
Eric and Holly celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary this year at a resort in Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula.  A trip to Chichen Itza was one of the highlights.
At home in Eden Prairie  Eric and Holly grow a lot of their own food- canning homemade Sala, pickles, and preserved vegetables in the fall.  Braelyn and Lincoln help with the preparation.  Braelyn is now six years old and in the first grade in the Eden Prairie school system. Lincoln is four.  We visit them several times a year and lately they have been visiting us over the Fourth of July.
Best wishes to all.
From Richard Kimball-
Sarah and I are wintering in our condo in the Art Deco historic district of south Miami Beach. We spend six months here and the rest in Milwaukee or traveling. I was free-lancing in Miami but my eyesight makes it to difficult to read music now. Wish I was a better improviser and I would do some jazz. Both Sarah and I are well and get a lot of bicycling and swimming in. We will be back in May and hope to see some ex- colleagues then. Best to all.
We also heard from Steve Basson-
These pix show the Massachusetts Bassons; the other one shows Phoebe in Brooklyn with her own poster asking that we save the planet ….Mr and Mrs B also added a little Ogunquit and lobster to this trip. Hope all is well with my fellow retirees.
And some great, surprising news from Norma Zehner-
I got married!  I wasn’t looking for love, but it just happened.  I met Hancer Gonzalez at a Spanish conversational group a little over a year ago, we started dating in March and things progressed very quickly. His daughter and her 3 children have been visiting from Venezuela for the past 5 months and, unfortunately, have to return soon.  Imagine me dealing with car seats, school registration, and so on. But it has been a very easy adjustment because they’re all so loving.
And there is some wonderful news about Megumi Kanda.  She has won the 2020 International Trombone Association (ITA) Award!  The following is from the official announcement and her background is included for those of you who may not know her.
The ITA Award recognizes the highest level of creative and artistic output in areas such as performance, composition, arranging, teaching, conducting, research and/or service.
Megumi Kanda, Principal Trombone of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, is a native of Tokyo, Japan. Megumi began to play the trombone at age ten and continued her studies at the prestigious Toho High School of Music, where she studied with Sumio Miwa, trombonist in the NHK Symphony Orchestra.  At age fifteen, she became the youngest player ever to be named as one of the top ten trombonists at the Japanese Wind and Percussion Competition. Two years later, she won the Grand Prize in the National Competition for Solo Trombone and won best soloist prize upon graduation from the Toho High School of Music.
  Megumi came to the United States in 1994, and received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with James DeSano, former principal trombone of the Cleveland Orchestra.  Prior to joining the Milwaukee Symphony in 2002, she previously served as a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, faculty member of the Eastman School of Music Community Education Division, and principal trombonist of the Albany Symphony Orchestra.
Megumi has performed in recital and as a soloist across the United States, Europe and Asia, including with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the US Army Field and Pershing’s Own Bands, and the Prague Chamber Orchestra.  As a JVC/Victor Entertainment artist, Megumi recorded three solo albums: Amazing Grace, Gloria, and Mona Lisa. She also can be heard on Magnifique Live, a live recording with other JVC artists recorded at an August 2005 performance at Takemitsu Hall in Tokyo’s Opera City. She is a regular guest artist at festivals such as the International Trombone Festival and the American Trombone Workshop, as well as at numerous colleges around the US and Japan.
In April 2006, Megumi was recognized by the Arion Foundation in Tokyo, Japan as one of the most influential Japanese classical artists.  She has also received a Certificate of Commendation from the Consul General of Japan at Chicago in recognition for distinguished service contributing to the friendship between the United States and Japan.  In 2017, Megumi was named by the Milwaukee Business Journal as one of Milwaukee’s Women of Influence in the category of education.
In her spare time, Megumi enjoys gardening, going to Milwaukee Brewers games, and taking walks with her husband Dietrich and sons Hans, Max, and Lukas.
This photo is Megumi with her early trombone teacher, Sumio Miwa, at his 80th birthday party early in January.
September 2019
Dear MSO Retirees,
I so wanted this to be sent early in the month, but travel and chaos just made it impossible.  There were several birthdays missed.  The first was Liz Clem’s 85th birthday on September 4th!  She sent a note and Sandra, Liz and Fred’s daughter, kindly sent some photographs.  Fred celebrates his 87th birthday on September 26th.
From Liz:
Fred and I are doing pretty well—in a nice retirement community since June of  ’18. We’re going to daughter Sandy’s for a birthday dinner this evening—and I have high hopes we can then actually have some pictures to send. Now that grandson Ted’s back in town (engineer and new homeowner/landlord) we’re all here except son John, who surprised us last weekend by flying up from Albuquerque for our 61st anniversary, and granddaughter Mary, who just started a Phd in Ecology (plant biology emphasis) at Colorado State University.  John loves his work as a cybersecurity researcher and analyst at Sandia National Laboratories, but is of course busier than one would choose.
Summer was “challenging”, with a knee replacement that included an infection, but all is OK now. Monday I start another poetry workshop, otherwise keep busy playing the piano. Fred was my indispensable knee caretaker and continues to enjoy his discussion group. We both are annoyed at all the attention aging bodies require but very grateful to be mobile ourselves.  It is exciting to remember all the music we made and the possibilities for the MSO we all helped build.
Cheers,
Liz
Big news in Milwaukee a few weeks ago was the moving of Grand Theater’s back wall in the renovation project.  You can read about it at
and for a good TV spot on the project and amazing quicktime view of the move itself (at the bottom of the print story), go to
Liz Tuma is here in Guilford, VT!  She is joining Judith Serkin (her roommate at Curtis), Peter Wiley, and Ted Mook in a Four Cello Celebration for the benefit of our Guilford Free Library.  Liz, Judith, Peter, and Jerry Grossman were the first four students of Guarneri Quartet cellist David Soyer when he began teaching at Curtis.  Liz visited with us and we were delighted to have the opportunity to catch up on her life in a very active retirement.  The program is on Friday the 13th and we are excited to hear the four cellists as a quartet, and in duos and trios.
This is about as high tech as Guilford gets.  Remember, it is in Vermont.
When I first took on the job of Retiree Liaison I hoped to include news of our colleagues that  were still with the orchestra.  Couldn’t find any volunteers to help keep me up to date, so I let that idea go.  I’ve decided to start including this news with what is available from the internet, mainly Facebook.
Karen Smith wrote and sent photos from a lovely birthday celebration.  She writes:
Don (Haack) joined Pat (Mumm-Lovely) and me at the Pfister Hotel Libby Lounge last evening to toast to Patty’s birthday. Pat and I have a tradition of quarterly-annual “meetings” at the Lobby Lounge to catch up on our lives.
Previous Stage Manager Debbie Steidl visited Paris this summer.  I was most impressed that she chose to take this wonderful return trip alone and ate many wondrous meals.
